71 impala 350 engine new edelbrock intake and 600 cfm carb. What are signs that I am loosing spark?

How do I know if my points are worn?|||the best thing you could do for your car is get rid of those old points and put in a petronix electronic ignition system in your old distriburator, isn't that expensive to do and then you will never have to worry about setting points again and the engine will always perform good.|||take a book of matches and guage them with one layer of the card board it should be a tight fit|||if you look at the points them selves, with them open you can look at the contact points. if you see heat damage or see a rough surface , replace them. lost spark is usually signified by an engine miss.|||Wow, people still use points on these engines? lol.. Most people replaces dizzy with an HEI unit or converts points dizzy over to elec with one of the kits.

Worn points, bad points, cracked points..

Engine back fires

Engine miss fire under load or when RPMs goes up.

Surges (RPM flutters)

You can look at them to see if theres any hairline cracks, burnt spots, etc on them. Be sure to grease the cam

The match book thing is an old, old backyarders way of setting points. Match books are made thinner now though.

Check point gap with a feeler gauge and adjust with feeler gauge or dwell meter (if you can even buy them anymore, lol). Set dwell at 29 to 31

I really would recommend swapping to an HEI dizzy. You'll get a stronger sprak, better idle, alot of times better fuel mileage and more power... Alot less trouble too.
